An important part of every kitchen is the sink. If you are replacing or installing new countertops, now is the best time to also consider the sink. This hard-working element sees a lot of use and the right sink can make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable.
When considering a sink for your kitchen understanding the basics will help you pick the perfect sink for your lifestyle and needs.
Mounting Styles
Sinks are available in three basic mounting styles.
Drop In or Top Mount
This easy to install sink, literally drops into the opening in the countertop. There is a lip or rim around the perimeter of the sink which lays on the countertop and holds the sink in place. This mounting style is used with laminate countertops.
Under Mount
These sinks are design to be installed under the countertop. This mounting style is used with solid surface, stone or wood countertops where the exposed edge is of the same finished material. Under mount sinks styles are popular for their clean aesthetic and ease of maintenance.
Apron Front
More commonly known as a “farmhouse” sink, an apron front sink features a deep basin and exposed front. They are available in drop in or under mount. This style complements traditional or more casual décors and will require a different cabinetry below it.
MATERIALS
Select a sink that meets your lifestyle specifics and works well with the other design elements in your kitchen such as your appliances, countertops, and cabinets.
